HEALTHY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS THAT STICK

New Year’s Resolutions suck!  The holidays have been a bustle of activity and you’re so over it now!  Sure, you and the family have been on the go, but there has been a lot of down-time and A LOT of eating!  Time for a Healthy New Year’s Resolution!  What?!

Sure, we understand – holidays are a time to take a chill pill.  Who wants to think about New Year’s Resolutions, especially health-related ones!  However, before the schools go back, it is a good idea to get your Healthy New Year’s Resolutions set.  The kids may moan – Heck!  Your partner may moan!  Double heck! You WILL moan! But, leading by example and introducing a fun element to the fitness pact, will make it all the merrier!

What do Healthy New Year’s Resolutions look like?

The trick with any New Year’s Resolutions is to make them simple and SMART.  Have you heard of this acronym?

new year's resolutions

If you can apply this to the Healthy New Year’s Resolutions, then it will have more of a chance of sticking.

S – SPECIFIC – don’t let there be any grey areas about what the resolution is

M – MEASURABLE – it must be trackable – show them how far they have come

A – ATTAINABLE – make sure it is possible to reach – it can be a little trying, but possible

R – RELEVANT – make it suitable and relevant to each person

T – TIME-BASED – put a timeline or reachable goal point to the resolution – there must be an end in sight

Here are some examples:

  1. 1. Sign up for an 8-week fitness challenge with Thrive – #BestSelfChallenge
  2. 2. Choose a sport and agree to stick to it for at least 3 months
  3. 3. Agree to eat at least one veggie portion a day
  4. 4. Commit to an exercise regime for 3 days a week, 45 minutes a session
  5. 5. Cut down on sugar intake and keep a measurable diary to keep track

How about some familyspecific Healthy New Year’s Resolutions?

  1. Spend at least 30 minutes a day together partaking in an activity outdoors
  2. Have a no-tech 30 minutes a day stint (keeping off tech is also a healthier option)
  3. Do the Park Run every Saturday together

There are so many options and it could be fun to keep these up on a communal board where everyone can be reminded.
